The UK's first HQM Certified Development, AES worked on a 100 home project for Crest Nicholson, guiding the client and design team through the new assessment criteria to achieve HQM, Code for Sustainable Homes, and BREEAM Communities certifications. | AES led workshops to clarify criteria, collaborated with the client and BRE, and successfully guided the first HQM-certified project to achieve all three sustainability certifications. | Through careful project management, Lancaster Grange achieved 40% CO2 and 18% energy efficiency savings compared to the original design. |
Neil Paterson, Head of Site Development, BRE
AES was engaged on the UK’s first HQM-certified project, a major development of 100 homes for Crest Nicholson, which aimed to achieve HQM, Code for Sustainable Homes, and BREEAM Communities certification.
As the appointed sustainability consultants for the first development certified under the new Home Quality Mark, we expertly guided the client and design team, working closely with the Building Research Establishment (BRE) to navigate the new assessment criteria and ensure the seamless integration of HQM principles at each stage of the project.
AES conducted detailed workshops throughout the design process to clarify the criteria for the client. This enabled us to maximise potential scores across the wide-ranging credit areas, including energy performance, material selection, ecology, and homeowner-focused features.
As this was the first HQM project, AES held regular feedback meetings with both the client and BRE to gain clarity. We also provided input and guidance to BRE on the development of the HQM standard based on our experience with this project.
AES’ ability to simplify complex criteria and collaborate with the stakeholders led to a successful project outcome, with the development achieving all three sustainability certifications and being acknowledged as the first HQM project to be delivered.
Due to our careful project management Lancaster Grange also achieved notable efficiencies in delivery, successfully achieving the following:
40% saving kgCO2 compared to the as designed development
18% saving kWh/m2 in fabric energy efficiency compared to the as designed development
This project exemplified AES’ expertise in navigating complex sustainability standards, driving efficiencies, and delivering impactful, future-ready developments.
