On 16 April 2025, BRE officially released BREEAM UK New Construction: Residential V6.1 (UKNCR), marking the rebrand and evolution of the Home Quality Mark (HQM) into the internationally recognised BREEAM framework.
At AES Sustainability Consultants, we’re proud to have been the assessors on the UK’s first HQM-certified project, and we’re ready to support you through this important transition.
While this is a minor update, V6.1 introduces several key changes to enhance clarity, improve alignment with industry standards, and respond to user feedback:
Natural Light: Updated metrics and applicable areas to align with best practice.
Life Cycle Assessment: Improved methodology to simplify assessment but improve reporting to align with industry standards.
Evidence Requirements: A revised schedule of evidence tables for clearer expectations.
Minor Updates Across the Scheme: Includes clarifications on sustainable transport, indoor pollutants, noise, sound insulation, temperature, inspections and completion, home information and post-occupancy evaluation.
This rebrand may have implications for planning. Where BREEAM is referenced in planning conditions, it may now apply to residential developments—not just non-domestic buildings.
If you're unsure how this affects your project, our team can help you interpret planning requirements and identify next steps.
With nearly two decades of experience in sustainability certification for new homes, AES can provide:
