70 is an important number for AES Sustainability as well as Her Majesty The Queen

The Platinum Jubilee weekend celebrates Her Majesty The Queen’s 70th year in service as British Monarch, AES has its own special 70th occasion too. June sees AES Sustainability’s 70th employee (excluding Directors) join the team of Sustainability Consultants and Testing & Compliance Engineers.

The last few years have proved very successful and aided further growth for the company. So far in 2022, eleven new starters have joined AES Sustainability Consultants of which four are brand new trainee positions helping the recruits start their journey into the sustainability industry. AES are firm believers in investing in staff development and three trainees received a promotion to fully fledged Sustainability Consultants earlier this year.

Toby Cottrell Sustainability Consultant said “Having been with the company a short while now it’s been fantastic to see the growth and development of the team in the last 12/18 months. It seems like we are taking new staff on every other week and we are still busy!! On a personal note, when I started, I was always looking forward to the day when I was able to drop the “trainee” part of my job title and thanks to AES I am now an accredited assessor and deleting the word “trainee” off my email signature was a good feeling”.

Another newly promoted Sustainability Consultant Emily Brockington said “ I started before the second lockdown and despite the complexities of working from home and being completely new to BREEAM, I have received tremendous support and training within my team. This has led me to pass both my assessor and AP training in just under a year and a half of being with AES.

From time-to-time staff leave for pastures new, however, the vast majority of vacancies can be attributed to growth recently promoted Director Silvio Junges said “Joining AES shortly after graduating from the University of Southampton with a MSc in Energy, Environment and Sustainability I started working for AES in 2011. Since then, I have been part of the growth AES has gone through. From less than 10 people and a limited amount of service the company has expanded to 70 employees and a wide range of services from planning to practical completion and defect diagnostics. We expanded our footprint in the industry and participated in projects such as AIMC4, DvAB and various industry steering groups. I’m proud of being part of this journey and especially of recently being promoted to Director. I aim to serve the company and industry for years to come on the journey to zero carbon”.

The Platinum year has also seen the introduction of a new team at AES Sustainability headed up by Judy Ong, Principal Sustainability Consultant, specialising in the Operational Energy and Carbon of Existing Buildings. Judy said “AES recognises that 80% of the building stock in 2050 has already been built, so retrofitting the existing building stock is an essential step to achieving net zero carbon. Our new team brings together a wealth of experience in energy efficiency, retrofit improvements and net zero carbon plans. The team’s focus will be on helping our clients with the retrofit and de-carbonisation of their portfolios and managing the transition to meet the increasing MEES targets for energy efficiency, alongside net zero carbon goals. There is a lot to achieve in the next 8 years, but assessing the current state of the portfolio and providing a priority list for improvements, helps define the steps to achieve net zero goals”. Judy’s team has seen significant growth with just one existing team member when she joined AES in November 2021, the team already stands at 7 and still recruiting and growing.

“It is such an exciting time for our business and there are so many opportunities for existing staff members to develop including new positions and new opportunities. The recent growth has also resulted in the recruitment search for a HR Manager allowing progress to be made on starting some new initiatives that will enhance the way we support our staff and also attract new staff” said Anna Farmer, Operations Director.

The recently rebranded AES Compliance & Testing (formerly Daltec Ltd) is just another success story, Stewart Boyce, Director said “As our 25th engineer joins the on site team this strengthens our position in maintaining prompt service and nationwide coverage for a range of services.

Fraser Hall, Managing Director said “I am very proud of our team here at AES who are extremely hard working and customer focussed. This is an interesting and exciting time for the sustainability Industry and AES is well placed as a market leader in maintaining great client relationships and service levels. It is important that we continue to develop and respond to the needs of our clients and the changes needed within the built environment. I am sure the whole team is looking forward to a well-deserved long weekend celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee and later this year we will host our own celebrations to toast the success of the business”.
